Engine lands 20 metres from car as driver flees Wolverhampton crash

An engine ended up 20 metres away from the car it was powering after a high-speed crash in Wolverhampton.

Up to four men fled the scene of the crash on Wolverhampton Road East at 2.30am this morning – prompting a police investigation.

The car had ploughed into a wall and lamppost and firefighters said one of the occupants could have suffered severe head injuries.

Photos taken at the scene showed a silver hatchback with a mangled front-end and major damage to the windscreen.

Its crumpled engine was left resting on the pavement, while debris and bricks surrounded the lamppost which was almost knocked over.

The incident left the road closed and saw two crews from Wolverhampton Fire and Bilston Fire in attendance – but there were no reported casualties.

Firefighters requested West Midlands Ambulance Service and West Midlands Police joined them at the scene before they left at 3.30am.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "Officers are investigating a collision on Wolverhampton Road East in Wolverhampton after a car hit a lamppost and wall just before 2.30am this morning.

"There were no reported injuries, though it is believed up to four men made off from the scene.

"The road was closed for a short time while the road was made safe.

"Enquiries remain on-going and anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting log 348 of 17 June."

Bilston Fire took to social media to warn motorists against driving dangerously.

They said: "Bilston Fire and Wolverhampton Fire are dealing with a high speed collision leaving the cars engine 20 meters away and the occupier with possible severe head injuries. Please always wear your seatbelt."
