It is believed the 19-year-old lost control of the Peugeot 206 before it crashed into a wall on the A462 Essington Road in New Invention, Willenhall, at around 4.10am, West Midlands Police said.

A woman who lives at the house, near the junction with Wrighton Close, tried to save the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His identity is not yet known.

Much of the wall was destroyed in the crash, with bricks left scattered across the driveway of the house, while flowers have since been left in tribute to the driver.

One neighbour, a woman, said: "It is really sad. I just feel sorry for the neighbour. The road was closed off this morning. There were fire engines and ambulances."

The road was closed between Lichfield Road and Milestone Way for around five hours as police collision investigators examined the scene.

Sergeant Alan Hands, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "A teenager has tragically lost his life and our thoughts are with his family at this terribly traumatic time.

"We want to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and may have information to help us establish the circumstances around this collision."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman added: “Ambulance crews arrived to find the driver of the car, a man, in a critical condition.

“The team of ambulance staff worked rapidly to administer advanced life support on scene but sadly, despite their best efforts, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead a short time later.”
