The brief hearing at Black Country Coroner's Court today heard the 74-year-old was found dead at her home in Doveridge Place, Highgate, on February 28.

A post-mortem examination revealed she died as the result of multiple sharp force injuries.

A second post-mortem is due to take place shortly.

The hearing was told her grandson Greg Irvin, 25, had been arrested and charged with her murder.

He will next appear at Birmingham Crown Court on April 6 for a plea hearing.

Detective Constable Cheryl Jones, from West Midlands Police homicide department, said: "She was found with multiple injuries at her home address. Greg Irvin was arrested and charged with her murder.

"There is no motive at the moment, and the investigation is still on-going."

Senior coroner Zafar Siddique offered his condolences to Mrs James' family and adjourned the inquest to allow criminal proceedings to take priority.

Neighbours described Anne as a ‘lovely’ woman who enjoyed gardening and was fond of cats. She lived at the address with her husband.

A statement put out by the family, in an emotional tribute, said: “We are all devastated at the loss of a loving wife, mum, grandma and great grandma.

“She was an amazing, generous, kind, and much-loved part of our family; she will be very sadly missed.”
