WATCH: Heroic Walsall shopkeeper wrestles gunman out of store

A masked gunman tried to hold up a convenience store only to be wrestled outside by a brave shopkeeper and his assistant.

The remarkable incident, which took place in Walsall on Christmas Eve, was captured on CCTV which has now been released by West Midlands Police in a bid trace down the suspect who fled the scene.

The raider entered Spend n Save in Pleck shortly before 7pm on Sunday, December 25.

Footage shows him immediately point the gun towards the two workers.

But then the shopkeeper bursts into action flailing his arms at the robber in an attempt to remove the gun from his hand.

His assistant soon joins him and between them they bundled the suspect out of the front door.

West Midlands Police stated a scuffle ensued outside and have called on any passing drivers who would have witnessed the disturbance to come forward.

The suspect is around 6ft 2ins tall and slim. He was wearing a grey hooded tracksuit and a mask. It is believed he fled from the shop on Pleck Road towards Wednesbury Road.

The gunman is thrown out of the shop

Det Con Gerry Maley, from Force CID, said: "As the footage shows the store's owner and his assistant managed to overpower the assailant and wrestle him out of the shop in a matter of seconds.

“We know the struggle continued outside and believe a number of passing vehicles slowed down and perhaps even stopped to witness the scuffle - I am urging these people to get in touch.

“Although the description is limited, it’s likely the individual is from the local area and someone will know exactly who is responsible."
