Power off in 970 Rugeley properties after substation fire

A fire in a power substation knocked out the electricity to 970 properties in Rugeley.

Firefighters were called to deal with the fire at a power substation on St Michaels Road, Brereton, on Friday evening.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was working with Western Power Distribution and that it was hoped power would be restored before 8.30pm.

In a social media post, the brigade stated: "The fire at St Michaels Road in Rugeley has now been extinguished and colleagues from Western Power estimate power will be restored in two hours or less."

While a Western Power Distribution post stated: "Engineers are working on a #powercut affecting customers in #Rugeley #WS15 and estimate to restore all supplies by 19:00. Our apologies for any inconvenience."
