Child among two with 'potentially serious injuries' in shocking Smethwick house fire

West Midlands Ambulance Service have confirmed that two people, including a child, have been treated for injuries as a result of a blaze in Sandwell on Sunday. 

Emergency crews rushed to the scene of Dunsford Road, Bearwood, in Smethwick, at 7.35am to reports of a house fire on the road.

On arrival, crews discovered the house fully alight, with six fire engines being dispatched to the scene. 

The fire service led four people to safety following the fire, with West Midlands Ambulance Service now confirming that two people, a man and a child, have received 'potentially serious injuries'.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a house fire on Dunsford Road at 7.35am yesterday (Sunday). Two ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor with a Critical Care Paramedic and the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team were sent to the scene. 

"There were two patients requiring treatment. A man was treated for serious injuries before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. A child was treated for potentially serious injuries before being taken to the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital."

Fire crews remained on the scene to dampen down and check for hotspots

West Midlands Fire Service said that crews remained at the scene following the fire to check for hotspots.

At the time of the blaze, the fire service said: "We led four people to safety who had been in the property. They had got out of the building before we arrived. 

"Our crews were on the scene within five minutes of receiving the 999 call at 7.35am."

Residents from the scene praised the fire service for getting to the scene so quickly, with one saying that 'it was great' to see the residents of the house walking around outside.

Father of three, Mohammed Khan, said: "The houses are all attached to each other or really close to each other on these streets, so if the firemen had not got here so quickly, it could easily have spread to the houses on either side.

"The fire service was here within minutes and was running into the house. They seemed to put it out really quickly.

"It was great to see the people from the house walking about outside because we were all worried they were stuck inside the fire.

West Midlands Police and West Midlands Fire Service have been approached for more information.
