Drink-drive arrest after car smashes into parked cars in Smethwick street

A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after a car collided with parked cars in a Black Country street.

Police were called to the Uplands, in Smethwick, at around 8.40pm on Saturday following reports of a vehicle colliding with parked cars, before the drive fled the scene.

A man was later traced nearby and arrested on suspicion of driving while over the limit and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

He remained in custody on Sunday afternoon.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We were called to reports that a suspected drunk driver had collided with parked cars in The Uplands, Smethwick, at around 8.40pm on Saturday night (1 May) before running off.

"Officers traced the driver nearby and arrested him on suspicion of driving while over the alcohol limit and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. A 31-year-old man remains in police custody."
