Bomb disposal squad called to Smethwick after unexploded device found in canal

A suspected unexploded device has been found in a canal in Smethwick.

Bomb disposal teams and police were called to the scene on Rabone Lane at about 3pm today after the device was found.

Nearby roads have been closed and the closure will remain in place until the morning, police said.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "Road closures are in place on Rabone Lane, Smethwick from Rabone Park to the junction of Cornwall Road and Foundry Lane, after a suspected unexploded device was found in the canal around 3pm today.

"The scene will be held overnight when the EOD will return to dispose of the device."
