Six people led to safety after Smethwick house blaze

Six people had to be led to safety after a "severe" bedroom fire in the Black Country.

Nobody was injured but firefighters helped six people from the house in Oxford Road, Smethwick, this afternoon.

Fire crews from Smethwick and Ladywood attended the scene alongside paramedics after the blaze started at around 2.45pm.

The road was closed as the emergency services dealt with the fire.

West Midlands Fire Service tweeted saying: "Our firefighters have led six people to safety from a house in Oxford Road, Smethwick following a severe fire in a bedroom.

"The first of our crews was at the scene in four minutes. We're still there, but the fire's now out."

Claire Brown, spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "We were called at 2.24pm to reports of a house fire on Oxford Road, one ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene.

"On arrival we discovered six people who had evacuated the house. Only two of them required assessing by ambulance staff, both women. Thankfully, following assessment they were able to discharged at the scene, uninjured."

It is not yet known how the fire started.
