The male pedestrian was struck by the Vauxhall Astra in Cornwall Road at around 12 noon on Tuesday.

He was rushed to hospital and as of last night he was still in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Vauxhall Astra fled the scene after the crash. The car was later found by officers in Charleville Road, in Lozells, Birmingham – just over two miles away from the scene of the crash – on Wednesday.

No arrests have been made so far in connection with the hit-and-run.

West Midlands Police have now issued an appeal for witnesses to try and trace the unknown driver.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are currently in the process of piecing together what happened leading up to the collision – collating and reviewing CCTV footage and forensically examining the car.

"I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision and hasn’t already spoken to us to get in touch as soon as possible."

Enquiries are on-going and anyone with information is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101 quoting incident number 915 of November 27.

Tuesday's hit-and-run is the latest in a series of serious crashes in the Smethwick area in the last two months.

A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries on October 3. A car hit the man, aged in his 60s, who was believed to be travelling on a motorised wheelchair in Cape Hill.

And this came hours before a fatal crash involving two cars and a pedestrian on Waterloo Road, half a mile away.

A 68-year-old woman, named as Surinder Kaur Saund, died after being struck by a taxi while she was walking to her parked car.
