'Be vigilant and spread the word' - Sandwell Council post warning after scam Winter Fuel Payment texts
Sandwell Council have issued a warning to residents after reports of Winter Fuel Allowance scam text messages.
In a post on X, Sandwell Council encouraged people to stay aware of scams targeting people about applying for a winter fuel payment.
It read: "If you get a text asking you to apply for a Winter Fuel Payment it is a scam. Winter Fuel Payments are made automatically, you do not need to do anything. #ScamAware "

Several versions of the scam text message, which claims to be from the UK Department for Work and Pensions, have been circulating since July.
One message received by the Express and Star reads: "According to DWP records, you have not yet submitted your application for the 2025-2026 Winter Heating Benefit. To ensure you receive your £300 payment, please complete your application by August 1, 2025.
"Failure to submit your application by the deadline will result in your ineligibility for the benefit. Please act now and complete your application."
If you receive a text message you believe to be fraudulent you can report it here.
