Richard Beckles, aged 19, of Stafford Street, Willenhall; and Tiego Beckles, aged 21, of Broad Gauge Way, Wolverhampton, have been standing trial accused of murdering and wounding Trey Johnson, known as ‘Gaza’, over a slight. Just 20 minutes earlier they had beat him up outside a city centre nightspot in Exchange Street following a confrontation over rumours he sold their mother drugs.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard the parties ended up to Eastfields after Mr Johnson allegedly threatened to “light up” their home and then the defendants received information that someone tried to get into the house. There was a foot chase and he sustained stab injuries.

Despite first aid given to Mr Johnson, aged 30, by the defendants’ mother who had come outside to see what was going on, and the efforts of paramedics, he died from his injuries at the scene near the family’s Burcot Avenue home in Eastfields at around 3.30am.

The Richard Beckles told the jury he was scared and it was his honest belief that Mr Johnson was aiming to cause harm and he was defending himself. Both defendants deny murdering and wounding Mr Johnson, who also suffered a fractured orbit of the eye. Richard Beckles also denies possessing a knife.

The trial continues.
