A jury in a murder trial concerning the death of a father-to-be following a fight in a Wolverhampton car park following Diwali celebrations has today begun its deliberations.

Navpreet Singh was run over twice by a white Mercedes coupe in Phoenix Park off Dudley Road in Blakenhall in the early hours of October 22 last year.

The 26-year-old was taken to hospital by his friends but died of his injuries in the waiting room despite efforts to save him.

Jashan Singh, aged 21, of Cannock Road in Westcroft, is accused of murdering Navpreet Singh by deliberately knocking him down then driving over him after an altercation between two groups in the hours after Diwali celebrations held in Phoenix Park.

Jashan Singh, also known as Jashanpreet Singh, also denies causing Navpreet Singh’s death by dangerous driving.

The trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court opened on September 28.

Today (October 21) the jury, having heard all the evidence and closing speeches from the prosecution and defence counsel, was sent out just after midday by Judge Michael Chambers KC to consider its verdict.

Jashan Singh and Mohit Singh, aged 18, of Tangmere Close, Ettingshall, are both accused of perverting the course of justice in that they allegedly swapped items of clothing to avoid detection or arrest by police.

Mohit Singh is also accused of violent disorder.
