More than 1,300 homes were plunged into darkness when a power cut hit Wolverhampton.

Lights went out in several streets in Tettenhall just after 8.30 last night.

Homes in Henwood Road and Woodfield Heights were without power for more than two hours and street lights also went down.

Engineers battled to solve the fault, which was located in an underground cable.

Rebecca Middleton, spokeswoman for Central Networks, said: "The power cut happened at 8.36pm and then came back on at 10.50pm.

"It affected 1,309 of our customers and was due to an underground cable fault."

Earlier this month around 1,300 homes were left without electricity and shops lost custom during a power cut in Wolverhampton. Stores at St John's Retail Park, Sainsbury's and the Wulfrun Centre were affected.

Last week the Merry Hill shopping centre and over 20,000 homes were left without power when vandals attacked a substation.
