Information "not in the public domain" is being examined by detectives over hundreds of deaths at Stafford Hospital, it has been revealed.

Calls have been made for police action following the deaths of between 400 and 1,200 people between 2005 and 2008 because of poor standards of care at the Weston Road site.

Staffordshire Police confirmed last week it had decided to re-examine evidence relating to the scandal and is working with the Crown Prosecution Service to see if further inquiries are required.

Matthew Ellis, Police & Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire, today said more evidence was being looked at that may bring individuals to book.

"There is more information that is not in the public domain that is going to be used to identify individuals who should be looked at," he said.

He insisted it was not just a "paper-based review" and is being led by Assistant Chief Constable Nick Baker.

Meanwhile, new figures have revealed Stafford Hospital ran out of beds for several days in the past month.

There were six days between January 3 and February 3 when all of the beds at Stafford Hospital were found to be occupied.

Occupancy figures have been released by the Department of Health.
