A further 59 more deaths were announced in the region, where the death toll passed 1,200, while the number of deaths in the UK rose by 761 to 12,868.

Meanwhile New Cross Hospital has put out an urgent appeal for PPE and in happier news a 106-year-old woman in Birmingham is thought to have become the oldest patient in the UK to beat the disease.

Further afield Captain Tom Moore has inspired the country by raising millions of pounds for the NHS by walking 100 lengths of his garden at the sprightly age of 99.
