Hairdresser who lost her own hair during cancer treatment offering free haircuts for chemotherapy patients

Amy Gyacsek has recently undergone chemotherapy for breast cancer and wanted to help give back to others in the community

A Wolverhampton woman is offering complimentary haircuts for anyone new to chemotherapy treatment after her own experience with breast cancer.

Amy Gyacsek only returned to work at Wow hair salon in Codsall last week having undergone chemotherapy herself, and wanted to help give back to others in the community facing cancer.

Her offer is for anyone who might be struggling with how to manage their hair post treatment - though she said she wants to support people unsure about styling wigs too.

The salon has been open for 13 years with Amy working there for 11. She took time off work after her diagnosis in April and subsequent treatment, and returned last year.

Amy said: “Being a hairdresser I’m quite matter-of-fact about my hair to get rid of it but for other people it’s quite difficult and quite a hard thing to do.

“That’s why I wanted to help the community and just give something back, so I’ll be offering a free haircut during chemotherapy when they shave it off and then afterwards too.”

Amy lost her hair due to her own treatment but looked on the positive side: when she initially shaved it she met with friends and they all tried on wigs to turn it into a positive experience.

“I’ve had a few people reach out who are struggling with their hair growing back as it can grow back very different, such as growing back curly, so I’m offering a free complimentary cut afterwards too, or if people are struggling with wig styling I’m here to help them too,” she added.
