Flooding hits Great Barr as fire service receives 'numerous calls' following downpour

The warning came as heavy rain caused problems on roads across parts of the West Midlands

Fire crews have been called to help with flooding in the Great Barr area as emergency services urge people to steer clear.

West Midlands Fire Service said crews were in attendance in Curbar Road on Wednesday evening (August 26) following reports of flooding after heavy rain.

The fire service said: "We have six crews in attendance at Curbar Road, Birmingham, where they have responded to flooding. Please avoid the area, where possible."

It comes as flooding causes disruption elsewhere in Birmingham, including on Queslett Road in the Old Oscott area.

National Express West Midlands said its number 5 bus service was being diverted due to flooding on Queslett Road, with buses travelling via Walsall Road, Beeches Road and Aldridge Road in both directions.

The fire service said it had been receiving "numerous calls" relating to flooding and issued advice to people whose properties are affected.

A West Midlands Fire Service statement said: "We are currently receiving numerous calls for flooding. We advise to vacate the property and to contact Floodline or the water board."

People are being asked to avoid Curbar Road where possible while emergency crews deal with the flooding.

Photos on social media also showed floodwater in nearby streets including Turnberry Road and Thornbridge Avenue.

A Government flood alert issued on Wednesday evening had warned: “Flooding may affect properties and roads around Trehurst Avenue, Chevril Close, Haddon Road and the Bowling Green.”
