'I had a lucky escape': Woman evacuated after car crashed into her Dudley home

”They must have hit the house with quite a whack.”

“It could have been a lot worse if someone had been in the front room”, a woman told the Express & Star after a car crashed into the front wall of her house in Dudley on Bank Holiday Monday.

Jenny Bates was in the back room of the terraced property in Highland Road with her two dogs when the car came into the house from the Tesco Express opposite.

The accident happened at around 1pm on Monday (May 25) and a couple who were in the car were treated at the scene before being taken to hospital. Nobody else was injured.

Fire crews worked at the scene shoring up the property and Ms Bates - who has lived in the house for 10 years - was evacuated.

Visibly shocked, she told the Express & Star: “The car came right through and if someone had been in the front room it could have been bad. It seems the car came directly over from Tesco Express and didn’t make a turn - they must have hit the house with quite a whack even though they were just coming off the car park.”

The two people in the adjoining property, Niamh Woodall and Owen Hudd, have lived there just over a year. Niamh said she wasn’t surprised at what had happened.

She said: “It might not have been the case this time but we get speeding motorists down this stretch all the time and I’m really not that surprised there has been an accident.

“We were in the front room and heard a loud bang and the cats came running off the window sill. We went outside and it looked chaotic. The couple in the car were taken to hospital and the fire service have been doing a great job clearing up and making the properties safe.

“We don’t know whether we will spend tonight here or be able to. It is yet to be decided but we will go with the advice of the fire crews.”

The Express & Star has contacted West Midlands Fire Service for more information.
