Firefighters were today spending a fourth day battling a blaze raging through acres of Midland woodland — and are likely to be there for up to four more days.

The marathon fire-fighting battle by crews from Staffordshire, the Black Country, Hereford and Worcester, Shropshire and Warwickshire, at Million Wood, between Enville and Kinver, continues as heathland and grass blazes ripped through areas of Scotland, Wales and North West England.

Much-needed rain showers are today set to bring some respite to emergency workers in Scotland, Wales and North West England by helping to douse the fires, experts predict — but central and southern areas of England will have to wait until Saturday for rain.

Tom Tobler, a forecaster from Meteogroup, the weather arm of the Press Association, said: "Some areas should get reasonable amounts of rain — up to several millimetres — and if it falls in the right places it could be enough to help the current situation."
