Ten students were forced to flee to safety in one of three huge fires in the region today.

The students escaped from a house in Walsall after tyres stored at a nearby garage caught fire and the flames spread.

Meanwhile, more than 50 firefighters were tackling a blaze at a warehouse in Hockley, Birmingham.

The flames ripped through Fashionwise Textiles in Mott Street.

Fire crews from across Birmingham and the Black Country were called to the scene at 3.30am and were still battling the fire during the morning rush hour.

A former manor house at a Dudley nature reserve was also set alight by vandals.

The roof of landmark Saltwells House, off Pedmore Road, was damaged following the arson attack yesterday. Firefighters say the historic house has been targeted numerous times.

In Walsall, the group of University of Wolverhampton students were in the lounge of a terraced house in Highgate Road, Caldmore, when they spotted flames and smoke in the back garden, which adjoins MoT garage Highgate Motors.
