Date revealed when last flights will depart from West Midlands airport before it closes for good

The date has been set when last flights will depart from a West Midlands airport before it closes for good.

It was announced in early December 2025 that Coventry Airport would be closing in 2026.

Today, the airport doesn’t operate scheduled passenger flights, and is mainly used for charter flights or training.

In the 1980s, Hards Travel operated flights to Spain, France, Italy and Austria as package holidays.

And from 2004 to 2008, Thomsonfly operated scheduled passenger flights to Europe.

Wizz Air also had flights to Poland from Coventry Airport, flying to Gdańsk and Katowice.

Passenger flights from the site ceased in 2008, but it continued to be used for business and freight flights.

Many in the Midlands have fond memories of when passenger flights did operate from the airport.

Users on Facebook have shared their anger and sadness about the airport closing.

One user wrote: “Such a shame. Spent many hours there over the years at airshows. Even flew from there on DC3 to flying legends”.

Another user said: “Pity. It was great to fly from with commercial airlines. Did Rome, Pisa and Ireland several times.”

Flight schools, Coventry Aeroplane Club and Nimrod Preservation group will all be impacted.

The airport will be replaced by a massive new ‘gigafactory’ Greenpower Park which was given planning permission back in 2022.

The last flights from Coventry airport are set to depart on 9 May.
