Robert Edward Lee was found guilty at Cannock Magistrates Court of driving the wrong way on a motorway and driving with a provisional licence.

The 32-year-old was stopped on the toll motorway at junction T5, Lichfield, while driving a white Audi A5.

In a statement provided to the court, a PC Ben Footman from Staffordshire Police said he was in an unmarked police car leaving the M6toll at junction T5 and approaching the toll booths on October 22 last year.

The officer, a member of the Central Motorway Police Group, said as he and his colleague headed down the slip road he saw "a set of head lights driving towards me and driving the wrong way on a motorway".

"It was clear the driver had reversed the wrong way out of the toll booth and then drove the wrong way on the motorway for approximately 100 meters.

"Due to this we illuminated the blue lights for the vehicle to stop. The vehicle turned into the HQ for the Toll Road and stopped. I went and spoke to the male driver over leaf where I asked him to come and sit in the rear of the police vehicle to which he did.

"Upon speaking to the male driver overleaf I explained the reason for the stop to which he stated his card would not work for toll road. I explained it was an offence and completed checks.

"Upon completing checks I found the driver of the vehicle had a provisional licence and no insurance to drive. The male driver stated that it was his friends vehicle and was asked to drive it home to Lincoln. There were no L plates on the vehicle and the driver was on his own. The male driver apologised."

At Cannock Magistrates Court on August 11, Lee, of Stour Court, Grantham, was fined £220 for each offence and received a total of nine penalty points, resulting in a driving ban.

He was also ordered to pay a £176 surcharge and £90 costs.
