Blunt force injury to the face and head given as the provisional cause of death of man who died on Welshpool street
Blunt force injury to the face and head has been given as the provisional cause of death of a man who died on the street in Welshpool.
An inquest into the death of Young John Anthony Mongan took place at Pontypridd Coroner's Court today.
Assistant coroner for The South Wales Central Area, Andrew Morse heard that Mr Mongan, 49, was involved in a physical altercation with another male in Welshpool on June 28 2026.
As a result of the altercation, Mr Mongan lost consciousness and passed away at the scene. He was identified by his family on June 28.
A post mortem was carried out by Dr Stephen Ledbetter at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. He gave a provisional cause of death as blunt force injury to the face and head pending further investigations.
Mr Morse said Mr Mongan was from Fullbrook Road in Walsall and he was born in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland on January 2 1977.

Mr Morse said he had heard that Mr Mongan suffered a traumatic or violent death and so an inquest would be necessary. He opened the inquest, suspended it pending the conclusion of police investigations. He said the family and other interested parties would be informed of a full inquest date in the future.
He extended his and the court's condolences to the family and friends of Mr Mongan.
