The 45-year-old man was found with injuries on the grounds of Smestow Academy in Castlecroft by an 11-year-old girl on Monday, January 19 and was pronounced dead at the scene.

West Midlands Police had been treating the death of Neil 'Chuck' Thompson as unexplained and officers were working to establish exactly what happened, with CCTV being reviewed and door-to-door enquiries being carried out.

They also launched an appeal to find an e-bike that the man had been riding from the Aldersley area along the Smestow Canal path on the outskirts of the city.

In a statement sent to the Express & Star a West Midlands Police spokesperson said the force had concluded their investigation, and Mr Thompson's death has been submitted to the coroner as an accident.

"We have now completed a thorough investigation into Mr Thompson's death and a file is being submitted to the coroner as an accident," the statement read.

"Our thoughts remain with his family who have been kept updated throughout."
