The man, who was on foot, was opposite the Shell Garage on Station Road, Stechford, when he was struck by a white car at about 1.30pm yesterday. The car, a white BMW 1 series, failed to stop at the scene but has since been recovered and will be forensically examined.

The pedestrian was treated by paramedics at the scene but nothing could be done to save him and he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A 27-year-old handed himself in at around 6.30pm yesterday, he was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody today.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the force’s serious collision investigation unit, said: “We are still trying to establish how this tragic incident happened and anyone who has information and hasn’t yet spoken to an officer should get in touch as soon as possible.

“We know there were buses and cars in the vicinity at the time, so I’d urge people to check their dashcams − they might have captured vital video evidence.

“My thoughts remain with the victim’s family, who are being supported by specialist officers."

Jamie Arrowsmith, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "We were called to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Station Road at 1.21pm on Sunday.

"Two ambulances and two paramedic officers attended the scene. On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who was the pedestrian. Sadly, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene."
