Bat and knife seized as four injured in Walsall street fight

A knife and a cricket bat were seized after a street brawl in Walsall that left four people injured.

Police cordoned off Lewis Street in Birchills, Walsall, last night after the fight at about 6.30pm.

Paramedics treated two men for potentially serious injuries before taking them to hospital. A woman was also treated on the scene but refused hospital treatment.

Police said four people were found with head injuries when they arrived and a knife and cricket bat were seized.

A 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of wounding and remains in custody.

The fight was being filmed on a number of mobiles and officers have appealed for those with videos to get in touch.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: "We were called to reports of disorder on Lewis Street, Walsall just before 6.30pm yesterday evening.

"It’s understood that a large group of people were fighting in the street armed with bats and weapons.

"On arrival four people were found to have suffered head injuries. Two of them remain in hospital but their conditions are not believed to be life-threatening.

"Our officers searched the area and seized a number of weapons including a knife and a cricket bat. CCTV is being looked at and house to house enquiries are taking place today.

"A 44-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of wounding, and is currently in police custody.

"Although the enquiry is still ongoing, we have already established that this was a targeted incident and the people involved were known to each other.

"We know that a number of people filmed what happened on their mobiles phones, and we’d encourage these people to get in touch so that we can view the footage as part of our investigation.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 6.33pm to Lewis Street, Walsall.

"Three ambulances and a paramedic officer attended the scene along with police colleagues.

"Three patients were identified with injuries following a reported fight.

"Two men suffered potentially serious injuries and were given treatment on scene before being taken to hospital for further assessment.

"A woman was also assessed and treated on scene for injuries but refused hospital treatment."
