Officers were called to the popular attraction off The Broadway just after 7pm last night.

They arrived to find four boys who had climbed into the grounds nearby to the shops.

An officer gave chase to one of the boys towards McDonald's, less than half a mile away on Castlegate Way.

Firearms officers then caught the 14-year-old boy, who was arrested.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "Police were called to Dudley Zoo on The Broadway in Dudley at 7.15pm last night to a report of youths breaking in.

"A 14-year-old boy was detained in a nearby road and will be spoken to in due course."

Officials at the zoo have confirmed that no damage was caused and no animals were harmed in the incident.

Dudley Zoo Manager, Matt Lewis, said: “At around 7.30pm a group of youths gained access to our stores area at the bottom of the zoo site.

"Mobile security patrols and staff were still on site at the time and no damage occurred.”
