Attempted murder arrest after man found with head injuries in West Bromwich

A man is fighting for his life after being found with serious head injuries in an alleyway.

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder as an investigation was launched.

The victim was discovered in the passageway, off Heath Lane, Hill Top, West Bromwich, this morning.

At least three police cars and two ambulances were spotted in the road near Heath Lane Cemetery at around 5.10am.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said crews were called to reports of an assault.

The man, aged in his 40s, has been taken to hospital and remained in a critical condition.

A spokesman said: "On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who was found in a critical condition.

“He received specialist trauma care at the scene and was taken to hospital.

“The doctor travelled on the back of the ambulance to help continue treatment en route.

“On arrival at hospital, the patient’s condition was described as critical.”

A 42-year-old man from West Bromwich has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, said West Midlands Police.

He remained in police custody for questioning today.

A cordon was in place while investigations are carried out.

The road was partially blocked near mental health facility Heath Lane Hospital.

People expressed their shock on social media when they saw the heavy police presence.

One man said: "You don't expect to head out to work at that time of the morning to find the road full of police."
