The man, aged 71, was attacked with a knife after robbers forced their way into his home in Oldbury just after 4pm yesterday.

The robbers fled with jewellery, an iPhone and £700 cash, leaving the man with wounds to his head, face and throat.

Seven people have since been arrested, while the victim's condition was today described as serious.

Arrests

Three men - aged 37, 40 and 42 - were arrested at an address in Cottage Walk, West Bromwich, at 9.20pm last night, just over five hours after the incident.

Then, in the early hours of this morning, police raided an address on Hollywell Street in Bilston and arrested three men aged 35, 36 and 38, as well as a 40-year-old woman.

Detective Inspector Jacqui Nicholson from West Midlands Police CID, said: "This was a grotesquely violent attack on a man in his own home.

"We suspect the robbery was targeted and not a random attack.

"We’ve responded quickly to make several arrests but we’d still appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time that might have seen anything, to get in touch as soon as possible."

Police have confirmed that CCTV is currently being reviewed and house-to-house enquiries are being carried out in the area.

A spokeswoman from West Midlands Ambulance Service added: "We were called at 4.15pm to reports of an assault.

"One ambulance, a paramedic officer and the critical care car from West Midlands Air Ambulance attended the scene.

"They treated a man who had suffered serious injuries.

"He was treated at the scene and was then transported to hospital."

Anyone with information should call force CID on 101 quoting log 1629 10/2 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
