The man, aged 24, was taken to hospital after being knifed outside The Village Hotel in Dudley.

Police were called to the hotel around 11.30am on Sunday.

The victim suffered life changing injuries but his condition is not said to be life threatening.

A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "I had been using the spa. I came out and there was a wedding fair so it was busy and we had to leave through fire exit because they had locked main doors.

"One of the gym members said someone had been stabbed. There must have been 10 police cars swooped and I saw an ambulance drive off."

It comes as council bosses have called for the police to address the issue of knife crime across the borough – which they say has risen.

Councillor Rachel Harris said: "It seems to me that the level of knife crime has risen.

"It is time for the police and local authority and others to look at this and say why and what is going on.

"We have had a number of really bad incidents – we had one in Brierley Hill and one in Stourbridge.

"It really is time to say enough is enough – we must sort out where these incidents are happening and deal with them.

"Personally I would say it is quite out of the blue – it is a respectable hotel and it is well used.

"I have been to events there myself – it is unexpected."

Officers said that an enquiry has been launched following the incident and called for any information.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to the Village Hotel in Dudley where a 24-year-old man had been stabbed.

"He was taken to hospital with serious injuries which are thought to be life changing but not life threatening.

"Enquiries are on-going to trace his attacker and officers are asking anyone who witnessed what happened or who has information which will assist the investigation to call them on 101 quoting log 889 of 4/3 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
