Consultation begins for Staffordshire shopfronts scheme
It is hoped to improve the appearance of shopfronts in Lichfield
A consultation on shopfronts across Lichfield city centre has begun and next week, council leaders are expected to agree to the development of a design code and grant programme to support the heritage shop frontage scheme.
It is hoped to improve the appearance of shopfronts while protecting the historic character of the city.
The design code will give businesses guidance on creating and sustaining high-quality, attractive frontages that are in line with the traditional street scene of the city. Participation in the design code is voluntary, however the council is working with businesses to align proposed improvements with the new design guidance.

Alongside the design code, council leaders are expected to approve a new grant scheme to encourage owners and tenants to restore shop frontages to their early heritage appearance. A capital budget of £900,000 was approved in the recent budget to fund the grant programme.
To be eligible for the grant scheme, the property must be located in the city centre conservation area, owned by an independent business or a community-run business with shopfronts open to the public. Grant money could be used on restoration and reinstatement of traditional timber shopfronts or paint colours, improving accessibility or hand-painted or traditional fascia signs.
Councillor Richard Holland, Cabinet Member for High Street and Economic Development, said: “Lichfield’s historic streets are a huge part of what makes our city so special, and they are something residents are rightly proud of. This scheme is about celebrating that heritage while supporting our local businesses to thrive.”
Based on the funding, it is estimated that up to 60 shopfronts could be supported using the grant funding.
He added: “By providing clear guidance and practical financial support, we’re making it easier for traders to enhance their shopfronts in a way that respects the character of our historic centre. A more attractive and welcoming high street benefits everyone – from businesses and residents to visitors who come to enjoy everything Lichfield has to offer.”
The design code consultation will run to 22 April. To view the design code and give your views please visit the Heritage Shopfront Design Code and Grant Scheme web page.
