Sandwell Council unveils new apprenticeship programme after being named among top UK apprenticeship employers

Sandwell Council has been recognised as one of the top 100 apprenticeship employers 2025 – one of only four local authorities nationally to achieve the ranking.

The 2025 UK top apprenticeship employers list – compiled by the Department for Education and RateMyApprenticeship – recognises and celebrates England’s leading apprenticeship employers for their overall commitment to employing apprentices, the diversity of their apprentices and apprentices’ feedback on their employer’s programme.

Ranked 64th this year, Sandwell has started more than 1,100 people on apprenticeships since 2017, with more than 650 as new entrants to the council. 

Apprentices are employed in all departments of the council, including Sandwell schools, and have ranged in age from 16 to 62.

Councillor Syeda Khatun, cabinet member for business and skills at Sandwell Council, said: “We are delighted to be recognised as a top 100 apprenticeship employer. Apprenticeships are a vital way of developing the skills and talents of our workforce, as well as supporting the local economy. We are proud of our apprentices and the valuable contribution they make to our council and our borough.

“We’re committed to helping people of all ages develop the skills they need for meaningful employment close to home. Apprentices also get to work alongside experienced and passionate colleagues in a variety of departments at the council.”

The council has also announced a bold new 100 Apprentices by 2027 programme with apprenticeships available in customer service, business administration, carpentry, IT, early years, marketing, horticulture, housing/property, adult social care, human resources, plumbing and gas central heating, painting and motor vehicle.

People can find out about roles available at two events taking place on Tuesday August 19.

One showcasing opportunities for trades apprenticeships is taking place at the Operations & Development Centre, Direct 2 Industrial Park, Roway Lane, Oldbury, West Midlands B69 3ES from 10am to noon.

Another event showcasing all roles available will take place at Sandwell Council House (Council Chamber), Freeth Street, Oldbury B69 3DB from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.
