The seven-metre wide Kings Barbers Club pod will be built next to an existing seating area adjacent to the store’s main entrance, just off the A4150 Ring Road near Chapel Ash.

Sainsbury’s, which made the application for the new facility, intends for it to operate as an additional convenience for use by shoppers visiting the store in Raglan Street.

A statement from Chris Milner of Leeds-based WYG Environment Planning Transport Limited – agents acting on behalf of Sainsbury’s – said the barbershop would run in conjunction with the store and was aimed at customers who were short on time.

Minor alterations will be made to the existing outdoor seating, which will be moved slightly to allow space for the pod to be built.

Permission has also been given for three signs; a revolving striped barber pole and two fret-cut Kings Barbers Club signs.

“The location, scale and design of the pod ensure that there will be no adverse harm to the visual amenity or the character of the commercial area,” said the statement.

“The pod is located in a well-established commercial area and will be viewed in the context of the store and car park.”

Proposed opening hours for the new barbershop will be 9am to 7pm Monday-Friday, 9am to 6pm Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

Kings Barbers Club is the UK’s largest independently owned chain of barbershops.
