Stop and search powers in place after man stabbed to death in Birmingham

A murder probe is under way

Police are using extra stop and search powers in Birmingham today as officers continue to investigate the murder of a man in Hodge Hill.

The Section 60AA powers will be in place from this morning (11am) until 11pm.

There has been an increased police presence in and around the area following the fatal stabbing of 34-year-old Zeshaan Shaukat on August 25.

Police say it remains an active investigation.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Today marks the funeral of Mr Shaukat, and our thoughts remain with his loved ones today. We continue to support his family and have updated them on our plans to keep the community safe.”

“Section 60 powers have been used in the area in recent days and this allows us to stop and search people without the need to have reasonable grounds.

“The powers we are using today also mean that police can tell people to remove face coverings.

“Detectives investigating the murder are still keen to hear from anyone with information about what happened, or footage from the area, to get in touch as soon as possible.
