Banks’s Brewery marks 150th anniversary with celebratory brew for Wolverhampton Beer Festival
A special brew paying tribute to 150 years of history will be available for beer lovers to try at the Wolverhampton Beer Festival.
Banks’s Brewery will raise a glass to 150 years of brewing history in the city with the launch of a one-off, special edition cask ale called the Sesquicentennial IPA.
Available exclusively at the Wolverhampton Beer Festival from July 24 to 26, the beer is a bold, hoppy IPA with a classic Banks’s character and is named in honour of the brewery’s 150th anniversary.
Dry hopped with Ahtanum, from Washington State in the USA, and the new English variety, Opus, the beer has a bold floral aroma, with vivid flavours of orange and grapefruit citrus along with fragrant elderflower and subtle herbal hints.

With the brewery set to cease operations in the Autumn, Banks's said the special IPA offers a fitting tribute that honour the brewery’s legacy, its deep roots in the Black Country, and the dedicated team at the brewery.
Banks’s beers will carry forward the brewery’s legacy, as Banks’s cask ales continue to be brewed from the historic Marston’s Brewery in Burton-on-Trent.
Julie Gale, Senior Production Manager at Banks’s who led the team brewing the Sesquicentennial IPA, said: “Over the past 150 years, Banks’s beers have become a symbol of craft, heritage and local pride.

"We’re proud to be serving this special Sesquicentennial IPA at Wolverhampton Beer Festival in honour of Banks’s legacy.
“This is a thank you to our drinkers, publicans, fellow brewers, our amazing, dedicated team at Banks’s and everyone who’s supported the brewery over the years.
"We’re incredibly proud of what this brewery has stood for over the past 150 years, and we couldn’t think of a better stage than the Wolverhampton Beer Festival to share this beer with the community.”
Banks’s has a long-standing relationship with the Wolverhampton Beer Festival since its inception in 1977, having proudly supported the festival over many years.
In 2018, its tropical-hopped IPA Guavageddon was voted Beer of the Festival by attendees.
Banks’s Brewery is working with local stakeholders to preserve items from the brewery, including the Wolverhampton Archives who will be entrusted with Banks’s historical brewing ledgers alongside a range of other historically significant documents from the brewery.
