American TikTok star visits Black Country Living Museum for the first time - but there was one small problem
Famous American travel and food influencer Kalani Ghost Hunter said he had an ‘amazing time’ when he visited the Black Country Living Museum for the first time - but he struggled to understand the accent!
When it comes to accents, the UK has a lot of them - plenty more than the US, despite the country being a mere fraction of the size.
And one of the most famous accents of them all is the Black Country accent - though some seem to find it difficult to understand at times.
Which is exactly what happened when a famous American TikToker, who is recognised for his travels across the UK, stopped off in Dudley to visit the Black Country Living Museum.
In a video, which has gained more than 20,000 likes, Kalani Ghost Hunter dubbed the Black Country accent - also known as ‘Yam Yam’ - as the ‘toughest accent to understand yet.’
Standing on a canal boat, he said: “We’re in Dudley and the folks here are very lovely but I don’t really know what many people are saying.
“It’s a very tough accent for me to understand. We’re on the canal boat here at the Black Country Living Museum - it’s beautiful here. It’s a really cool place but I don’t know what anyone’s saying.”
Black Country-based fans of the influencer took to the comments laughing about the confusion, with one user writing: “Ar, owamya Bab? The Black Country dialect is one of the oldest in the country. We missed the Great vowel shift, so we spake different dow we?” Another added: “ The closest to old English that's why mush .”
The museum themselves even responded with: “What yow mean yow cor understand us? “

However, it he didn’t let the small problem get in the way of having a good time.
In a separate clip from his visit, he was seen trying old school fish and chips, made with beef dripping - he said he would ‘definitely recommend it’ for the flavour and a back drop that is like ‘stepping back in time.’
He also tried the traditional ‘belly filler’ bread pudding, which he described as ‘very dense’ and brick-like, though he loved the flavour and would prefer to pair it with a cup of tea. “I like the flavour. I like the texture. It’s just huge,” he concluded.
At the end of his ‘incredible’ day at the heritage site, the influencer wrote: “The Black Country Living Museum was well worth the stop. It’s such a wonderful way to learn about life from years past and to appreciate how much this area contributed to the Industrial Revolution — innovations that helped shape the modern world.
“History like this is so important to preserve. It’s also why I think so many people take pride in coming from this area. It’s something to be proud of!”
Fans were delighted he enjoyed his day at the museum. One user wrote: “I'm so glad you spent time in the Black Country at our wonderful living museum if you came from England as a native you'd understand our part of the country is somewhat maligned and overlooked at times but we are the heart of the industrial revolution and have a History few parts of England can match.”
Another added: “Hope yowm tawkin proppa now! Glad you enjoyed the trip. Told you it was good! Bostin, ay it.”
