Stafford has stood at the heart of Staffordshire for around a thousand years, and there are reminders of its history all around its characterful town centre.
From the Elizabethan Ancient High House to the Neoclassical Shire Hall, from the Victoria Park of 1908 to the Norman St Chad’s Church (not to mention the ancient Stafford Castle west of town), the town centre must boast one of the most historic settings in the region.
But there is change afoot: Stafford is in the middle of an ambitious regeneration project thanks to a £14.3 million grant from the Future High Streets Fund.
In 2023, a £1m refurbishment of the historic Market Square was completed, followed by enhancements to the approach and entrance to Stafford Railway Station in 2025.
Meanwhile Stafford Borough Council has purchased and demolished the former Guildhall Shopping Centre, an old Co-op and neighbouring units, plus the town’s former Wilko store, to clear the way for future development.
