In pictures: Great Wyrley abuzz with St George's Day celebrations this weekend
Dozens of people turned out for a special St George's Day procession in Great Wyrley on Saturday.
The Great Wyrley community surely came together this weekend to mark St George's Day with costumes, music, games, and a special carnival and procession.

St. George's Day is usually celebrated on April 23 each year to commemorate the death of the patron saint of England.

This year, the South Staffordshire village went all out for its celebration which included a parade of drummers from the Brereton Corps of Drums, as well as floats that were decorated by the children from local schools and residences.

The procession left Harrison's Sports Club on Wharwell Lane at 12pm, travelling around the top of Landywood and around the village before returning to the sports bar for the fete.

All of the proceeds raised from the event are donated to the Great Wyrley Royal British Legion.

Pauline Kelsey, secretary of Great Wyrley Carnival Committee, said: "A lot of the adults were in their St George's regalia, as well as the children.

"We have a lot of community events here in Great Wyrley. The carnival is on the last Saturday in June, so this year will be on June 28.
"That's one of our biggest events, we normally have about 50 stalls, a lorry float procession and the falconry display, and much more.

"We also handed awards to two children who were selected as St George and his English Rose, Freddie Whittaker and Mia Forrester, who led the procession.
"They got a trophy, as well as £25 and a ride around the procession on a lorry float. They were chosen on their community involvement at school and within the carnival committee."
