Bridgnorth councillor quits Labour Party over 'Shrewsbury-centred politics'
A Shropshire councillor is to stand down from the Labour Party at the next local election.
Rachel Connolly, who represents Bridgnorth West and Tasley at Shropshire Council, says she will stand as an independent at the next election.
Councillor Connolly, who was Bridgnorth Mayor in 2023-2024, said the decision to leave the Labour Party would free her from “Shrewsbury-centred politics”.
In an open letter to voters in the ward, she said: “I have thought long and hard about whether I wish to continue to be your councillor given the amount of hard work and frustrations that come with this role; however, I have concluded that the numerous times I have been able to help individuals across the ward and the thanks they show is enough to motivate me to stand again.
“I will be standing as an Independent Candidate on May 1. I will be your independent candidate putting you first and being free to put the needs of Bridgnorth West and Tasley and Bridgnorth as a whole at the very top of my agenda.
“Being independent will free me from Shrewsbury-centred politics and allow you to continue to fully trust me to put your best interests first.
“I hope that you will continue to give me your support and allow me to keep fighting for our town and local area as your truly independent candidate.”
