13 nostalgic pictures that show why Wolverhampton misses its beloved speedway at Monmore Green

It was more than just a sport for those who loved Wolverhampton Speedway - it was a way of life.

Thousands would attend summer evening meetings at Monmore Green, watching world class racing and meeting up with friends.

The historic club first raced at Monmore in 1928, and its legions of dedicated supporters across the city were left devastated when stadium owners Entain Group pulled the plug on race meetings in April 2023.

Now Monmore Green concentrates on greyhound racing, and the summer evenings around East Park no longer reverberate to the sound of speedway.

Today we look back at some of the images that show the joy speedway brought to the city.

There is still hope that speedway can find its way back in the city, with owner and promoter Chris Van Straaten continuing to look for a suitable site - a mission that has the support of Wolverhampton Council.
But as time goes on the vivid memories of balmy nights at Monmore Green are beginning to fade. The year 2028 would mark 100 years since speedway first came to Wolverhampton. We are still to see if there is any way back for the sport before then.
