Redundant speed camera destroyed by arsonists' tyre fire

Like all Black Country speed cameras, it hasn't been turned on for five years.

Arsonists destroyed a speed camera when they wrapped a tyre around it and set it on fire.

Dramatic photographs show the camera engulfed in flames as fire crews battled to extinguish the blaze early this morning.

The speed camera was set fire to on Wolverhampton Road in Oldbury, near to the junction with Broadway.

No speed cameras have functioned in the Black Country since they were turned off in 2013.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "The camera was deliberately set on fire. We got a 999 call at 12.19am today.

"We sent five firefighters to the scene. The incident involved one speed camera that was deliberately set on fire. We used one hose reel jet to tackle the blaze."

Oldbury Fire tweeted: "We made a 'speedy' response to this incident during the night on Wolverhampton Rd, #Brandhall. A tyre was placed over this #Gatso and ignited. #Arson"
