Shop workers ignored Wolverhampton gun raid threats

Two robbers with a gun threatened store staff – but fled with cigarettes as they refused to open a safe.

After the man and woman ignored the gun threat the thieves grabbed 30 packets of cigarettes from a display cabinet before fleeing in a silver Peugeot getaway car.

Police reached the Spar shop, Birmingham New Road, Lanesfield, Wolverhampton, moments after they fled at about 8am yesterday but flooded the area with officers and flashed details of the wanted vehicle to all patrols in the area.

Less than 30 minutes later a car was stopped at the junction of Dovedale Road and Mount Road, Penn, and two men aged 35 and 29 were detained.

The were helping police with their inquiries today.

Acting Detective Inspector Steve Walters said: "This was a frightening robbery where two innocent shop workers were threatened with violence and although they were unhurt they are both shaken up.

"We are appealing to any witnesses to come forward."
