The owner and staff could not be contacted, but the restaurant's page on Facebook had the message: "I hope everyone has had a good Christmas and new year. We have come to announce that since December 24, The Imperial Restaurant is now closed for business. We enjoyed everyone's support and custom and we bid you farewell."

The telephone number for the business no longer works and there are no signs in the window to explain the closure.

The number of jobs lost by the closure of the School Street restaurant, which had been open for 12 years, is not clear.

Gary Edge, of Zaks Hairdressing next door, said: "It was always quite busy I thought. I'm surprised it hasn't reopened this side of Christmas."

Staff at Don Salvo restaurant on Darlington Street added they had not seen the restaurant open its door since before Christmas.

The Imperial opened in 2001 in the unit underneath the Beatties car park.
