Jeweller hit with sledgehammer in Smethwick raid
Watch the dramatic moment that a jeweller was struck on the head with a sledgehammer after confronting masked raiders who smashed their way into his shop.
Four robbers wearing balaclavas battered their way through the front security door at Davand Jewellery, in Smethwick, using the sledgehammer.
They smashed glass counters before loading around 17 trays of gold jewellery, worth tens of thousands of pounds, into a bag held by one of the raiders.
Store owner David Nicholls and his wife Linda were in the back of the Bearwood Road shop getting ready to close up for the day when the robbers struck.
Mr Nicholls, aged 53, confronted the gang, throwing items at them and demanding they leave his shop. But they hit him on the head twice with the edge of the sledgehammer, causing him to suffer a head injury that needed hospital treatment.
The robbers escaped in a vehicle last seen driving along St Mary's Road.
Mr Nicholls, who has run the store for nearly 30 years, said the raid at 4.40pm on Saturday was the most frightening thing that had ever happened to him or his wife.
The couple today said they were unsure whether to continue running the business.
It is not known how much was taken in jewellery but Mr Nicholls said the total sum would run into thousands of pounds.
