An emergency weight restriction on Holt Fleet Bridge has prompted fears of traffic chaos as heavy lorries take short cuts to cross the River Severn.

Worcestershire County Council says the enforcement of a 7.5 tonnes weight restriction at Holt Fleet Bridge is "of paramount importance on safety grounds" and has been implemented as a matter of urgency.

Officials say following a recent inspection the decision was taken to impose the restriction because of concerns about the safety of the structure.

But the decision has caused concern to parish councillors in Ombersley and Doverdale who fear that heavy lorries finding their route across the river closed will be looking for routes along country lanes or diverted through Bewdley and Stourport.

They also fear motorists will face chaos in the area because of the restriction which comes at a time when Severn Trent are carrying out essential water mains renewal work, which is due to start on June 22 and which will last for ten weeks.

Gemma Buggins, spokesman for Worcestershire County Council, said work being carried out by Severn Trent would be done in stages with restrictions in place for up to 18 months for the essential work.
