UK's 'best beach' just three hours from Wolverhampton with pretty promenade and beach-side ice cream kiosks

A dreamy two-mile expanse of golden sands lies just three hours from Wolverhampton

The AA has compiled a list of the best beaches across the UK - and the site that topped the list is just a three-hour drive from Wolverhampton.

More than 220 Blue Flag beaches have been ranked based on sunshine hours, water quality, lifeguard presence and visitor reviews.

The overall best beach is said to be Devon’s Exmouth Beach.

It is a gateway to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site, so the beach boasts impressive walks.

Not only this but there is also a pretty two-mile-long promenade, with traditional fairground rides and amusement arcades. There are waterfront cafes, pubs and beach-side ice-cream kiosks for families to enjoy.

Nearby Exe Estuary is internationally important for birds and is home to seals, wading birds, and migratory species. Boat trips often offer opportunities to spot local wildlife.

Visitors can take sightseeing cruises on the estuary or head out to sea for wildlife tours and coastal views.

The beach's wide open aspect provides excellent opportunities for photography, especially during golden hour.

A spokesman for The AA research said: "With top marks for water quality, an average Google review score of 4.7, its own RNLI lifeboat station and lifeguard patrols during the summer months, Exmouth Beach tops our list of the UK and Ireland’s best beaches.

"This two-mile stretch of sand on Devon’s stunning Jurassic Coast offers plenty of space for families to enjoy the seaside.

"There are designated dog-friendly areas year-round, plus a lively promenade offering easy access to watersports centres, an amusement arcade and a dinosaur-themed playground.

"Parking is available at several seafront car parks, with both short- and long-stay options within easy walking distance of the beach."
