Stellantis develops new modular platform to scale up production

New platform will underpin more than 30 new models.
Stellantis is working on a new platform which aims to improve its global production while reducing overall complexity.
Called STLA One, it’s a new module vehicle architecture which has been designed to ‘support multiple powertrains and vehicle sizes’, allowing the group to create a wider number of models off a single underpinning.
In all, Stellantis says that the STLA One architecture will be used on more than 30 models, helping it to produce more than two million cars by 2035.
Features such as lithium-ion batteries and cell-to-body integration should enable the platform to deliver high levels of technology at a lower cost, while 800-volt capability will mean that cars on the setup will be able to accept high rates of charge. Integrating the battery cells within the body of the car should help reduce costs overall and is something that has been adopted by many other manufacturers.
Ned Curic, chief engineering and technology officer, said: “STLA One is a clear example of a truly modular strategy, giving us the flexibility of a multi-energy platform without carrying inefficiencies from One propulsion system to another.
STLA One will cover B, C and D segments, while allowing for a multi-energy approach which will bring combustion engine and electric-only setups. Stellantis says that this approach is key to its ability to ‘compete on cost, simplify operations and strengthen competitiveness.”
Stellantis has also said that the new platform will allow it to introduce further technologies and speed up the rollout of new models. It is planned for launch in 2027.
