And you don’t need to know the story of the Four Seasons as their fascinating rise to fame is played out on the stage. But you will know most of the songs in the show from their extensive catalogue of hits that continue to stand the test of time.

Jersey Boys follows the hard-fought path of the Four Seasons and Frankie Valli from the tough streets of Jersey to international stardom.

Having won 57 awards worldwide, this super-slick musical has been delighting audiences for many years. It is quite a coup for the New Alexandra Theatre to host the start of the second national tour of Jersey Boys over Christmas.

The tour runs into 2019 including a stint at Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre in the summer.

Even those who are big Valli fans or who think they know the story of the Four Seasons may be surprised by the show

There are always two, or in this case, four sides to every story and this is reflected in Jersey Boys with each of the four band members narrating the story from their own point of view having been interviewed by the writers.

The arguments, the money troubles and strained relationships are laid bare.

Valli is played by Michael Watson who manages to recreate that quite distinct voice and bring the hits to life.

The role of founder band member Tommy DeVito, who ironically almost brings about the group’s demise, is played by Simon Bailey. As well as his musical talent, Bailey brings humour to the role and gives a convincing portrayal of the seemingly arrogant but quite insecure Jersey boy.

Declan Egan as songwriter Bob Gaudio and Lewis Griffiths as fourth band member Nick Massi also offer strong performances.

As might be expected, there are some 35 hits and favourite numbers in the show from Sherry and Big Girls Don’t Cry to Walk Like a Man, Beggin’, Bye Bye Baby and the more experimental Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.

All musical performances were lapped up by the theatre audience with cheers and applause - delivered as enthusiastically as if the original band were performing live themselves.

The storyline and action is fast paced and the costume and scene changes incredibly smooth and slick.

Jersey Boys has a compelling story, wonderful score and some great musical and acting performances – a must see for any music lovers.

Oh What a Night indeed.

Runs at the New Alexandra until January 6 – the perfect antidote for theatre lovers who don’t want to watch pantomime.
