Market Harborough is a hidden gem for a quaint, lovely, old-fashioned day out - and I can see why it has just been named one of the best places to live in the UK.
The quaint market town boasts charming independent shops, a historic vibe, and a calendar of community-run events.
I visited the beautiful market town not long ago and found that it was brimming with indie boutiques, delis, antiques shops and cafés.
Now it has been named in The Sunday Times' Best Places to Live 2026 guide - and I can see why.
Set in the rolling countryside of Leicestershire the market town feels both relaxed and refined.
The town centre is brimming with life and boasting traditional pubs, all anchored by the striking Old Grammar School - a quirky, centuries-old building.
What really makes the town special is its balance. You get the calm of rural life - green spaces, nearby canals, and easy access to countryside walks - without feeling cut off.
The Grand Union Canal runs close by, offering scenic towpaths perfect for cycling or slow weekend strolls.
Yet at the same time, direct rail links to London mean you can reach the capital in about an hour, making it ideal for commuters who want space and quiet without sacrificing opportunity.
The expert guides at The Sunday Times said: "It's well connected, has good schools and shops, is surrounded by picturesque countryside and property prices are far lower than in many similarly well-appointed spots further south.
"But it isn’t only perfect on paper. You only have to stroll the streets of this lively Leicestershire town to see that this is a place powered by a collective spirit. Volunteers engineer everything from Parkrun - 800 people ran it on Christmas Day - to the wonderful community theatre and cinema, the Festival of Cycling and the summer carnival."
There’s a strong sense of community with local market and events - and that is increasingly rare. It’s the sort of place where life moves at a more human pace - busy enough to be interesting, but not overwhelming.
I had a lovely day out in Market Harborough and I can see why people would want to live there, and why it has been named in The Sunday Times' prestigious annual ranking.
